Summer is the time of the year we love to be outdoors, being active and getting a tan. However, this is also the season when our skin is most susceptible to damage due to pollution and UV rays. Here we suggest a few simple steps to protect your skin and keep it glowing.
1. Cleanse
During the summer, we all sweat more. Pollution in the air and dirt containing free radicals stick more easily to the skin and can cause damage. Therefore, it’s important to cleanse your skin with a gentle cleanser at the end of every day before going to bed to allow the skin to breathe properly and recover.
2. Exfoliate
Twice a week, be sure to exfoliate with a sugar scrub to remove dead skin cells and reveal fresh skin that gives you that glow. Why sugar and not salt? Sugar cane naturally contains Alpha Hydroxy Acid, long used in facial peels. So you get double exfoliation benefits when using sugar scrub. It is also important to use a quality oil-based sugar scrub so it lubricates and nourishes your skin while you are exfoliating.
3. Hydrate
In the heat of the summer, you will lose much more water from sweating. To keep hydrated, drink at least 8 glasses of water a day and avoid excessive alcohol consumption.
4. Moisturize
One hugely overlooked aspect of skin care in the summer is moisturization as we sweat a lot and tend to avoid putting creams on our skin. However, if you are in an air-conditioned environment, you need to moisturize. Air conditioners remove moisture from the air and dry out your skin. Be sure to apply an antioxidant body moisturizer all over before bedtime to keep your skin hydrated.
5. Protect
Last but not least, make sure you wear a sunscreen. We recommend a broad-spectrum sunscreen with physical blocks such as Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide. While they may give you a slightly pasty look, they provide the best protection against UVA, which causes skin damage and premature aging.
